Mobile Outreach Twenty years ago, John McConnell founded the Math and Science Center of Western Colorado, with a few "mobile" experiments in the trunk of his car. For almost three years, he once again took "the show on the road" in the Center's Mobile Outreach Van. Now, he is going to take a well-deserved respite from traveling and concentrate on creating and updating exhibits for the Center. However, outreach programs for schools and communities outside the boundaries ofMesa County, will continue to be led by the Center's STEM Fellows (see below). The focus of these outreach programs is to provide elementary and middle school students with hands-on science activites and training for teachers. The outreach program supports state curriculum standards. For more information or to schedule a program, Contact Rhonda at the Center (970-254-1626) or rwoltjer@mathandsciencecenter.org. STEM Fellows Sponsored by the College of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Colorado at Boulder and other generous donors, our staff of college fellows conduct outreach into the local schools to inspire students to pursue careers in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM.) Because our students are each enrolled in different courses of study within the STEM umbrella, they are able to offer a unique breadth of knowledge in these fields. The fellows host a variety of educational opportunites which include after-school programs, community events, classroom instruction, and camps throughout the year. See our calendar or call the Center for details and scheduling. |
